James Binning (Assemble) and Emma Bell (Ecological Land Cooperative) discuss themes from Common Treasures, a new series of books about the challenges faced by rural communities, written by people who are working on the ground and in the fields. Each volume gathers the very best essays about climate adaptation, food production and land use, and presents them as alternatives to the prevailing political discourse.

Jame Binning [he/him] s is a founding member of the design-led interdisciplinary practice Assemble and has a teaching position as a postgraduate studio leader at the CASS School of Architecture and Design since 2015. Within Assemble he has worked on a range of projects, from the design and fabrication of furniture and installation projects, to the orchestration of large-scale collective build projects, and the design of public spaces in the UK and abroad.
Emma Bell [they/them] joined the Ecological Land Cooperative in early 2023 as a steward member, tending one of the Greenham Reach farm plots in Devon alongside their partner. They combine their farm-to-fork venture, Landwich, with over a decade of professional experience as a Governance Professional and Company Secretary in the education and charity sectors Passionate about radical, transparent, and accessible governance, Emma champions cooperative models such as DisCO and organisational democracy. Serving on the ELC Board, they bring both stewardship insight and governance expertise to the cooperative’s mission.
