EAT: CONGEE
CONGEE is an installation by artist Alastair Kwan which transforms Van Gogh House’s kitchen and garden into a canteen serving Hong Kong style congee: a savoury rice porridge dish widely eaten across Asia. Through CONGEE, the space will become a meeting point, engaging the local community in Lambeth, Asian diaspora, and celebrating the amazing diversity of London’s neighbourhoods.
Please note there will be some walk-in availability for this event, so do come by!
In a separately bookable event between 1-2pm, writer and community organiser Jenny Lau discusses themes from her book, An A-Z of Chinese Food (Recipes Not Included).
Saturday 4 October 11am-1pm and 2–4pm
Van Gogh House, 87 Hackford Road, London SW9 0RE

Alastair Kwan [he/him] explores his experiences as part of the British Hong Kong diaspora, investigating its aesthetics, contradictions and digging into its colonial roots. His practice brings together a variety of disciplines including sculpture, drawing, cooking and growing. He recently completed a residency at Wysing Arts Centre (2024-2025) and graduated from MA Sculpture at the Royal College of Art in 2021.
